Overview & Challenge
Vision Personal Training (Vision PT), recognised as one of Australia's premier personal training services specialising in weight loss, fat loss, exercise, and nutrition, needed to expand their digital presence. After redesigning their public website, we were tasked with creating a mobile app exclusively for Vision Virtual Training users to help them achieve personal transformation goals.
Key Challenges

- Translating the high-touch, personalised experience of in-person training to a digital platform
- Creating a seamless connection between members and trainers on the go
- Designing intuitive interfaces for tracking complex nutrition plans and training programmes
- Building a food diary system that was comprehensive yet simple to use
- Ensuring the app complemented rather than replaced the personal trainer relationship
- Adapting the experience for both iOS and Android platforms
- Balancing comprehensive tracking features with ease of use
My Approach & Contribution
I led the design process to create a custom mobile app that would help users monitor their exercise, training plans, nutrition, and food intake wherever they were. The app needed to enhance the relationship between client and trainer rather than replacing it.
What I did
1. Mapped out the complete mobile experience and interaction design
3. Designed interfaces for checking and tracking nutrition plans, training programmes, and schedules
5. Produced 60 screen wireframes and 16 different interaction flows
7. Translated the initial iOS designs to Android, ensuring platform-appropriate interactions
2. Created connections between members and trainers for on-the-go communication
4. Developed an intuitive food diary system that balanced detail with usability
6. Described complex interactions to developers through detailed documentation
I approached the project by first understanding the relationship between trainers and clients, identifying the key touchpoints where digital tools could enhance rather than disrupt this connection. For example, the food diary was designed to make nutrition tracking simple for clients while providing trainers with the detailed information they needed to offer guidance.
Results & Impact
01
Successfully launched the app in April 2012, enabling on-the-go fitness management
03
Developed intuitive tracking tools for nutrition plans and training programmes
05
Designed a solution that worked across both iOS and Android platforms
02
Created a digital platform that strengthened the trainer-client relationship
04
Built a comprehensive yet user-friendly food diary system
06
Increased client engagement and client retention through enhanced digital support
Key Learnings
Digital tools should strengthen human connections, not replace them. The app worked best when it enhanced the trainer-client relationship rather than trying to automate the personal guidance that makes fitness coaching effective.
Detail matters, but only if people actually use it. We had to find the sweet spot where tracking was thorough enough to be useful but simple enough that clients would stick with it consistently in their busy lives.
Personalization beats one-size-fits-all every time. By adapting to each client's specific goals and program instead of offering generic solutions, we created a more engaging experience that kept people motivated between sessions.
The app transformed how Vision PT clients interacted with their fitness journey, allowing them to maintain focus and accountability between training sessions. It extended the trainer's influence beyond the gym, creating a more continuous and supported experience that led to better outcomes.

Customer views his food diary and clicks to add an item to the Breakfast. He could add recently used items or search for an item . The item he selects will be added to Breakfast by default, however by using the arrows he can add it to e.g. Morning Tea. He can select single or multiple items and when he is done he will tap to DONE button to finish. This will add all items to the food diary in the associated "meal time"
